Help journalists find connection
OpenNews connects journalists who care to the support they deserve
We share power, knowledge, and care. Join us!
For over a decade, OpenNews has served and connected courageous, caring people working in journalism to others who really give a damn about making a difference. Our community is a support network that shares power, knowledge and resources – valuing every journalist, fostering equity in newsrooms and media, and helping produce impactful journalism.
Our programs and events help thousands of journalists find a way forward in an increasingly difficult industry. Now, we need your financial help to keep going.
The support you offer today is critical as a new generation of journalists find their people in the OpenNews community through programs like:
- SRCCON: "A conference that doesn't suck!" said one 2025 participant. Our signature conference features participatory sessions on topics selected by the community, social time with other participants to solidify new connections, and an invigorating, inspiring atmosphere you'll want to bottle up and take home with you.
- Scholarships+: Grants to help journalists with little to no institutional support attend events or sign up for training they can’t normally access. Go to that conference or take that training that'll level up your work with our support!
- Source: Our blog publishes emerging leaders in our field, offers honest assessments of how to improve our work, and shares detailed reporting explainers to use in your work.
- Community Calls: Bi-weekly, open calls where we discuss new projects, interesting topics and important resources to know about as a community!
We’ve seen folks move through the OpenNews community into leadership roles over the years — bolstered by what they’ve grappled with and learned along the way from their peers and networks. That includes our two co-directors, and many others connected to OpenNews, who have imbued our work with an indelible sense of empathy that shapes and reinforces everything we do. We’ve also seen too many good people leave journalism because they never found the support they needed.
We’re as committed as ever to creating meaningful programs and gatherings where ideation, experimentation, and cross‑pollination flourish. Our community of caring journalists, technologists and media makers set the agenda as we build the types of spaces where possibilities emerge and participants mobilize.
Your donation helps make our current programs and the next phase of this work possible (a new community manager is coming soon!). Recurring donations are especially meaningful because that's money we can count on as new threats to the future of journalism and democracy pop up daily.
We’re grateful to continue amplifying your amazing work and care for one another. For too long, finding support in journalism has been an unplanned happy accident. Help us change that.
